Smoothies! With tumeric! Don’t close out of your screen! Tumeric in a smoothie sounds kinda weird, but I promise it’s delicious and REALLY good for you (so I’ve been told.)
Tumeric has recently become a bit of a trendy ingredient and I can totally see why. Tumeric has been used medicinally for centuries in both asian and indian medicine. It has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that help with arthritis, joint pain and skin inflammation amongst many other things. I recently gave a tumeric latte a try- not for me. However, blended up in a smoothie, I’m all about it and this is why.
Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with chronic hives. Here’s the cliffsnotes version of what happened and why I too have jumped on the tumerica bandwagon. A few months before I went to the doctor, I started getting hives here and there- when I was nervous, when I worked out etc. Then it escalated. I would get them for no reason, in the middle of the night, when I was at work- it sucked. After seeing my PCP, an allergist and a dermatologist, I finally have it under control but in addition to the regular medication I am on, I try to work as many natural remedies into my diet as possible, and tumeric fits into that perfectly. Plus she’s pretty, isn’t she- that yellow!
For the smoothie I mixed tumeric, peaches, a banana, ice, almond milk, a dash of cinnamon, a little bit of honey, a spoon of vanilla protein powder and lots of ice. You could do pineapple, or regular apples or mango or even oranges!
- 1 medium banana
- 1 cup frozen peaches
- ½ cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- ½ cup water
- 1 teaspoon tumeric
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (or ½ cup greek yogurt- your choice!)
- pinch of cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup
- 1 cup ice
- Add all ingredients to a blender.
- Blend until smooth!
- Makes 1 large smoothie or two small smoothies.
